About Spirit of Small Business

Quote:

"Good leaders make people feel that they're at the very heart of things, not at the periphery. Everyone feels that he or she makes a difference to the success of the organization. When that happens people feel centered and that gives their work meaning."

Take Out The Old To Bring On The New

Take out the old to bring on the new

Take time to tune up your business and your life during downtime.

We’re coming up on holiday season and many of us experience a slower pace in our businesses and a faster pace in family. This is a great time to generate a facelift in our lives. Here are a few productive things to do during this time:

Prepare for the winter. Look at what your company will need in the “winter” months. Did a product you sold or needed last year go out of stock for an extended period? Order it now so you have it when you need it. Did you run a special which was particularly successful last year? Is it worth it to run it again? Although winter is connected with hibernation for some, much can be done to generate energy and rejuvenation. Get creative!

Review your inventory. Are products you purchased two years ago taking up valuable space? Are there forms you created which are no longer in use? Do you have all that you need at your finger tips to generate a new wave of business? May I suggest that you also review your personal inventory, where are your energy sources depleted? What will you do to plug the holes? What new habit/processes will you embrace to be certain your business and life inventory is never low?

Update your database. Data on your customers can be a source of important information that can direct your business on a better path. Do you have all the data you need to generate consistent contact with your clients past and present? This is also a great way to make contact with past customers and let them know what’s new at the office.

Update your Forms – Do all of your forms have your correct contact information? Any tweaks you would like to make?

Set an Office and/or Home Clean up Day – there’s power in numbers, enroll the assistance of your staff and/or your family to declutter your environment. This is a great time to donate unwanted – no longer used items to charity and for a tax write off. Declutter all areas, your computer, your paperwork, your product inventory.

Make the time to connect with staff - this could be a great time to reconnect with the staff and have brainstorming sessions about what’s working and what’s not. What thoughts do they have to increase business? Remember, you don’t have to do it all yourself.

Make time for family – Drop the guilt, nurturing the family system can do wonders to rejuvenate your heart and connect you to what’s really important in life.

Decide what the next 365 days will be about – Create a theme which will motivate you and your staff or family. A theme assists you in accomplishing your goal. Name the one thing you would be outrageously excited to accomplish by the end of 2005. Make that your theme and energize your staff and/or family to assist you in accomplishing it.

Coaching Challenge

The holidays get a bad rap every year.  We get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season that we forget to breathe and be present to all the opportunities around us.  How will you turn this time into a magical resource for creativity and rejuvenation?   Take time right now to come up with 2 things you will do differently this holiday season to ensure your enjoyment.  Are there any other items you would add to the list above?  I’m enthusiastic for you and the new direction your business and life will take with the exercises above.  Keep me posted on your adventure.  We love to hear your stories.
