Quote:"Good leaders make people feel that they're at the very heart of things, not at the periphery. Everyone feels that he or she makes a difference to the success of the organization. When that happens people feel centered and that gives their work meaning."

Choosing to be ExceptionalPassion in your work and life can turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. Yet, how many people can truly claim passion as an emotion we experience every day? Many people are stuck in routine lives where they have packed too much into any given day and frankly can’t figure out how to reduce their responsibilities. This month, let’s take a look at transforming routine into extraordinary. In business as in life, we will not be remembered for what we did but instead for how we did it. Choosing passion in your work and life will give you the energy to go the extra mile every time. I recently saw a documentary about an 8 year old boy from Canada named Ryan. Ryan heard in class one day that there were people in Kenya who did not have a means to obtain clean water and that he could donate money to help build a well. He decided that he wanted to make a difference in this situation and set out to raise the money to build a well. He became so passionate about it that he enrolled the assistant of many around him. His parents informed him that they would support him to raise the money but would not give him the money outright. This did not detract from Ryan’s passion and enthusiasm. He was initially told he needed $70 which he raised in 4 months by completing chores around the house. As he went to turn in the $70 he wanted specific information about where the well would be built. His parents assisted him in getting in touch with an agency that directly works to bring clean water to people in third world countries. Ryan was told that $2,000 was a truer number for the completion of a well and the agency gave specific information about a school that could use a well. Ryan’s passion and enthusiasm was catchy. He creatively came up with various fund raisers and collected the appropriate amount of money to build the well. The agency so appreciated the commitment from Ryan that they sent him to see the well in Kenya. Ryan was so touched by the children of the area that when he returned to his home land, he began a larger campaign to raise money to expand the school and the story goes on. Enrollment at the school has gone from 1,100 to 2,600 students with Ryan’s help and Ryan has inspired many children in Canada to do similar things. The ending statement in the documentary was from Ryan who stated firmly that age does not make a different in accomplishing a dream. Even children have the power to move mountains. As we look at this story, it is important to know the definition of the word ‘passion.’ Webster’s dictionary defines it as boundless enthusiasm; comprised of powerful deep emotions. When we demonstrate passion in our work and life, nobody and nothing can stop us. I often hear from clients that they just can’t fit one more thing into their day. The number of activities they have collected over the years are now chocking them. In our conversations, we begin by looking at all of these activities and deciding which ones they enjoy…which ones they are passionate about. They soon discover that as they move into doing the things they love their lives are much easier to balance. Living an extraordinary life is indeed possible. It simply takes knowing and embracing passion. By bringing passion into your life, you will have more energy, be happier and accomplish more. Are you up to the challenge? Coaching ChallengeTake a moment to review your appointment calendar for the past 6 months, did you smile and get excited or did you feel heavy and stressed? How can you bring passion to the next 6 months? In order to live an exceptional life, we must be consistently reinventing ourselves. Observing our actions and expanding our awareness to ensure that each step we take in work and in life is easier than the last. Your assignment is to make the commitment to include passion in your life and with that commitment, map out the next 6 months. You may have to be flexible since reinvention can require trial and error, be patient with the process. Choose to be exceptional! You can do it!!
