About Spirit of Small Business

Quote:

"Good leaders make people feel that they're at the very heart of things, not at the periphery. Everyone feels that he or she makes a difference to the success of the organization. When that happens people feel centered and that gives their work meaning."

     ~~ Warren G. Bennis

Necessity or Habit - You Decide!

Have you ever thought about your daily actions and asked yourself, ‘Is this necessary?”  How many people do you know who consistently go through life with routines which do not please them yet they feel they have no choice or option to change?  I’m certain we can all admit to knowing at least one person like this and perhaps that person may be you personally.

According to Webster’s Dictionary, a habit is “a recurrent, often unconscious pattern of behavior that is acquired through frequent repetition.  Habits applies to behavior or practice so ingrained that it is often done without conscious thought.”  Some of these habits come from family values and patterns –example:  A Mom is making dinner and takes the ham she is cooking and trims the ends off before placing it in the pot.  The daughter who is watching asking Mom why she did this.  Mom says, I’m not sure, let’s go ask Grandma the Mom says.  In asking Grandma, they discover that is Grandma’s days as a cook, the pots were much smaller and the ham did not fit so she would cut off the end to place it in the pot properly.  All three ladies have a good laugh and a next time a full ham was cooked, the entire thing is cooked.  It’s so easy for us to follow a pattern blindly.

When we can get to the root of the problem, we’ll solve the problem.  This may not work every time, yet as we begin to ask ourselves questions which allow us to ponder what is working and what isn’t, our awareness allows us to change without struggle.

I’m sure you have a sense about what is working and what isn’t in your life.  How much of what isn’t working in your business and personal life comes from habits you have adopted?  When I’m working with clients, I offer them the opportunity to muse about things that are bothering them.  Simply ponder about the challenge.  Don’t try to fix it or demand yourself to change.  Forcing does not work.  Ask the following:  Isn’t this interesting?  I wonder when I began this behavior.  This is interesting, wonder who taught me to do this?  As they ponder with “I wonder” questions, they learns tremendous things about themselves, including how to live a life they enjoy.

Life is good when you are doing things you love.  Give this process a try and let me know what you notice.  I’ll look forward to hearing from you.

Coaching Challenge

It is important to mention that this exercise definitely requires loving yourself exactly as you are.  Your current habits are what they are…..something you learned from someone … no more, no less.  For this month, ask yourself the following questions:    How many patterns do I follow daily? How many routines do I have?  Where/when did they start?  Do they still serve you?  Use the “I wonder” format above to assist you in lovingly digging through the information in your mind and gently seek awareness.  I guarantee you life will be much more fun.  Please write to me and let me know what happens for you.

The Gift of Change

Marianne Williamson

"The only way to gain power in a world that is moving too fast is to learn to slow down. And the only way to spread one's influence wide is to learn to go deep. The world we want for ourselves and our children will not emerge from electronic speed but rather from a spiritual stillness that takes root in our souls. Then, and only then, will we create a world that reflects the heart instead of shattering it." --from the Introduction

In this honest and uplifting book, bestselling author Marianne Williamson delves deeply into the powerful role of change in our lives today. Far from being something to fear and avoid, she says, every change -- even the most difficult and painful -- gives us an opportunity to receive the miraculous gift of personal transformation. The only real failure in life, she observes, is the failure to grow from what we go through. We will find real growth when we reorient ourselves using an eternal compass of spiritual principles, which alone can guide us on this path to wholeness.
