About Spirit of Small Business

Quote:

"Good leaders make people feel that they're at the very heart of things, not at the periphery. Everyone feels that he or she makes a difference to the success of the organization. When that happens people feel centered and that gives their work meaning."

     ~~ Warren G. Bennis

Leading with Heart

With the all the conversations about the presidential elections, I've been thinking about for whom I'll vote.  In doing so, I've looked at what is important to me in a leader.  While there are many ways to review this topic, it is important for each of us to think about what makes a great leader.

Here are some of my ponderings:

  • Effective leaders know that they need followers.  If they are truly ready for leadership, they have given thought to the qualities of those followers and where to find them.  Knowing your audience makes leadership an easy road to follow.

  • Fantastic leaders are visible in the companies and in their communities.  This leads to great opportunities through the power of networking.  Referrals are easy to receive when people know you and the work you do.

  • Dynamic leaders understand the responsibility of their position and respond to the needs of the situation with level heads and dancing hearts.

  • Great leaders use the power of their heart to make decisions which catapult their companies and organizations to great places.

  • Powerful leaders know themselves inside out.  They are open-minded and authentic.  Integrity and trust are critical to their operating style.  They have foresight to celebrate the talents of the people around them and they know that they wouldn't be successful without them.

What kind of leader are you?

Coaching Challenge

This month become aware of your heart.  What part does it play in your daily life (above and beyond keeping you alive)?  Notice how you make your decisions -- with your head or heart?  Shift your style to embrace your heart energy for at least 21 days out of the month.  Let me know what you notice.  Most importantly, enjoy the process!

Heart-Centered Leadership:
Author: Susan Steinbrecher and Joel B. Bennett

Heart-Centered Leadership champions the message that sound ethical practices must begin from within. This kind of leadership is a personal choice and involves the whole person: body, mind, and spirit.

Through the application of seven underlying principles and virtues, the authors describe a clear path: from the moment you are inspired to be a heart-centered leader through the process of developing the healthy attitudes and responsive actions needed to convert your inspiration into reality. This focus- an inward, mindful striving to do the right thing and become the best person you can be - sets this path to leadership apart from other strategies.
