Stick With The Basics

We live in distraction-filled times... billboards, advertisements, infomercials, and TV and radio commercials invade every aspect of our lives.  Every one of these distractions is asking us to switch to their product or service because it will transform us into a better person, give us an easier life, etc.  Let's think about how often we have switched products and the magic which was promised either didn't happen or we didn't have the patience to follow through.

"When you finally give up and decide to live your own life instead of someone else's,  life gets incredibly simple....it's not hard to live with joy.  It only looks that way".....Suzanne Falter-Barns

I found this quote when I was looking through the various gems on my bookshelf.  How true it is.  When we begin to tune out the distractions, we get back to basics.  We turn inside and begin to listen to our true calling -- what is it we really want to do with our lives and how will we find joy in all that is happening around us.  I remember reading a book by Louise Hay many years ago where she said that until we accept ourselves where we are right now, we cannot move forward.  Let's begin today to drop our stories about how the past has done us wrong.  We all have stories and we all tell them over and over again.  Some of us tell them with such fervor that we relive it each time we open our mouths.  Getting back to basics means dropping the stories.  It means saying yes to the challenges of the day instead of resisting.  It means saying yes to letting go of people and emotions which no longer serve us.  Here are a few tips to help you in taking this one bit at a time:

1).  Become aware of the stories you are telling.
2).  Become aware of the emotions these stories are creating.  Notice how your body is reacting every time you tell the story.
(First you gently notice, then you take action.)
3).  Begin to catch yourself in the story and remind yourself to move on to another thought.  Do this gently with as little criticism as possible, eventually moving to no criticism at all.
4).  Gather a support network who will creatively remind you to drop the story and invite you to a different conversation.
5)  Take notice of how your life is changing.  Are you sleeping better at night?  Are you accomplishing more in your day? Which people are no longer in your circle of influence and which ones are returning?
6) Celebrate the changes in your life by giving yourself a special treat.... a massage, a bubble bath, a walk in the park, extra time with your mate, etc.

Sticking with the basics means being aware of the simple things which bring you happiness.  Uncomplicate your life and remove as many distractions as possible.  Take a look at each area of your life over the course of a year and take action where needed.  My experience is that this cannot be done overnight.  It takes consistent gentle focus to reinvent yourself.   The rewards, I assure you, are priceless!!

Coaching Challenge

Accept yourself....Begin each day with the affirmation of love and forgiveness.  Start with yourself -- love yourself for who you are today and forgive yourself for the shortcomings of yesterday.  Then project the same love and forgiveness on each person in your current circle of influence.  Remember that as you send these thoughts out, you are asking for them in return.  Allow yourself the pleasure of receiving the love AND the forgiveness from others.  Always remember that in any of these exercises, awareness is key.  Be aware...notice...feel... how your life becomes lighter, more joy-filled
