Refreshing Your Finances

Money always seems to be an interesting topic in any conversation.  There is so much bias against money, while in reality, money is simply a piece of paper or a coin to which we have attached a meaning.  I'm sure you have heard the quote, "Nothing has any meaning but the meaning we give it."  So what is your meaning of money?  What have you labeled it?  Does it serve you or do you serve it?

Marianne Williamson in A Return to Love said, "Sometimes our debts are so big or so confusing, that even though we have the best of intentions, the burden and the guilt may be so overwhelming, that we just go on automatic. - push the bills to the back of the drawer and try to forget them - or change our phone number.. The universe will not support that. A big person is not someone who never falls down, A big person is someone who, when they fall, does whatever it takes to get up again."

Here are a few exercises you might use to get in touch with your current meaning of money:

1)  Write a letter to money as your friend and have a detailed conversation with this new friend.  Spell out your deep feelings and intentions.  Ask your new friend the hard questions.  Thank your friend for the gifts you have received, etc.

2)  Think about your interaction with money from your earliest memories.  What were you taught by your family?  What money-related experiences did you have when you were a child?  Did your family often say, "we can't afford that", "not enough to go around",  or "starving children in other countries"?   What era did your parents come from and what beliefs did that era hold? For example, if they grew up during World War II, they may have grown up with a frugality and scarcity theme.

3)  What part does the media play in your current interaction with money?  What do the advertisements we see on TV and billboards tell us about money?

There are many other exercises you can do, and the purpose of working with these exercises is to get in touch with your thinking and the beliefs you have developed over your lifetime.  These beliefs are what drive us in our financial experience.

The first step is often the scariest, and this could be the biggest step of your life.  Money is the number-one cause of divorce, and in my opinion, the number one cause of stress, which is the number-one cause of most illnesses.  See how this is all interconnected?

Have you ever wondered why we have give money such power?  Is it true that it is the root of all evil?    What I can tell you from my experience is that once you begin to face your fear of money, many great things happen.  Your business begins to increase.  Your relationships become stronger, healthier and more rewarding.

I hope you will accept my challenge this month and begin to make a few changes to raise your standards in this area.  I'd be interested in hearing of your successes and the strategies you used.

Coaching Challenge

Accepting your finances is your challenge this month. Take time today to review your financial picture.  First, create a vision for where you would like to be.  Then acknowledge where you are today and begin to take action toward your vision.

Don't panic when you see your current picture.  Remember the quote above, "to the best students go the greatest lessons".  Take action by setting an appointment with someone you trust to review the "real" picture.  Work with your advisor to create baby steps to change this picture if your money condition is not very healthy.  If your money condition is healthy, perhaps it's time to raise your standards.  Your advisor can assist you in creating a plan which excites you into consistent action in either situation.  Define your standards and make then real ... your vision is your driving force.
