Receive More By Doing Less

In the U.S., it seems we believe that movement equals success.  The more we do, the more we think we will have.  We tend to fill our lives with non stop-motion.

Here's an example:  My daughter, Renee, and I were attempting to complete a list of things I had set out for today.  Both of us had a bit of a cold and really felt like just resting.  She suggested that we go home and take a nap and then set out again to finish the few things left.  My response was to complete the list and then rest.  As I said that I realized that my list never ends.  There is always one more thing to do.

Is your life like that, too?  Renee reminded me that the important things always get done.  Funny how my own words come back to me exactly when I needed them. To make this a short story, we did go home, took a 30-minute nap and then I completed more than I would have originally and I felt much better.

I have written before about the two questions I use to assist me to focus.  The first of these is, "Where's my time best spent?", and the second is, "What's the most important thing I can do right now?"

These two questions assist me in being in the present and creating focus time.  In order to truly receive more by doing less, we must keep our thoughts on what is true in the moment.  If you are pushing, you are struggling.  The basic rule to remember is that if it's a struggle, you don't belong there.  It's important to be aware of our own actions.  What's working?  What's not?  Often letting go of the things we think we need to do creates the opportunity for something better to come along.

Coaching Challenge

Take a few minutes this week to notice how you are spending your time.  Just like money, time is a precious commodity.  Use a 3x5 card and for just one day jot down how you have used every minute.  How much time did you spend worrying?  How much time did you spend pushing?  How much time did you spend doing?  How much time did you spend just being?  Once you are aware, you can make the changes needed to receive more by doing less.

Radical Honesty: How to Transform Your Life by Telling the Truth
Author: Brad Blanton

At once shocking, entertaining, and profound--Radical Honesty is revolutionary book that takes a fresh look at how we live, love, and attempt to heal ourselves in modern society.

Radical Honesty is not a kinder, gentler self-help book. In it Dr. Brad Blanton, a psychotherapist and expert on stress management, explodes the myths, superstitions, and lies by which we live. He shows us how stress comes not from the environment, but from the self-built jail of the mind. What keeps us in our self-built jails is lying. "We all lie like hell," Dr. Blanton says. "It wears us out...it is the major source of all human stress. It kills us." Not telling our friends, lovers, spouses, or bosses about what we do, feel, or think keeps us locked in that jail. The way out is to get good at telling the truth. Dr. Blanton provides the tools we can use to escape the jail of the mind. This book is the cake with the file in it.
