About Spirit of Small Business

Quote:

You simply will not be the same person two months from now after consciously giving thanks each day for the abundance that exists in your life. And you will have set in motion an ancient spiritual law: the more you have and are grateful for, the more will be given you.

Sarah Ban Breathnach, Author, Simple Abundance

When the Tank's on Empty--Building Reserves in All Areas of Your Life

Building reserves is can actually be a relatively simple thing to accomplish, yet when the tank is empty, it's one of the most difficult things to do.  Let's use the example of financial reserves -- you want $10,000 in your bank account as a fall-back reserve.  You then focus on the $10,000, and after a period of time when you're not being successful, you eventually decide it's too big of a goal and abort the whole idea of creating a reserve.  What's the secret here? Reserves are built a step at a time, and with each step the momentum grows and the enthusiasm builds.

First, identify the areas of life where the energy is low by using an exercise called the "Wheel of Life".  To create your own wheel, draw a circle and divide it into eight segments (or more) and enter the various areas of your life.  Family, Friends, Health, Wealth, Career, Environment/Space, Children, Time, Recreation, Romance, Spirituality would be examples.  Then on a scale from 1 - 10, determine where are you in each of these categories. Ideally, all areas would have reserves even if you are at a 10.  Our purpose today is to identify which ones are low.

Second, pick one or two to begin building reserves.  If you chose time, for example, now you would need to spell out what a reserve of time looks like for you.  Does this mean you always get to appointments 15 minutes ahead of schedule?  Does this mean that you know when to stop working and start relaxing?  What exactly does it mean to you?  Be specific, be clear, and spell it all out.

Then take one step today toward creating the reserve. Each day build the momentum for your end result.  If you would like a reserve of cash, you can begin with placing all of your change in a jar each evening.  If you would like a reserve of time, you can begin with buffering each appointment with 15 minutes on each side.  If you would like a reserve with family, you might take a few minutes today to acknowledge your partner, children or parents for the nice things they do for you.  If you would like a reserve in health, perhaps you would start today to drink one or two glasses of water.  If you want reserves in your career, may I suggest that you identify an area where you are passionate and develop an income stream with that passion.

As you can see, there is always a place to start and the finish line is never far away when we take the first step.  Having plenty of reserves supports us in living longer lives because it greatly reduces the stress of daily living.  Begin today with one small step in any area, listen to your inner voice, hold yourself to a process, love yourself in this process and celebrate each little accomplishment.

Coaching Challenge

Identify at least one area where your reserves are depleted.  Begin today with one little step.  Commit to each day taking a step.  Celebrate with each milestone and acknowledge your efforts.  Ask one person to hold you accountable in this process.

The Tao of Abundance: Eight Ancient Principles for Abundant Living
Author: Laurence G. Boldt

"The art of abundance is not the art of making money, but the art of knowing how to live." Drawing heavily on Taoist concepts of work, creativity and love, Boldt offers a systematic program for achieving well-being. Asserting that the Western emphasis on subduing nature and our relentless consumer culture offset the perception of "abundance," he suggests that feelings of prosperity and contentment can flourish independently of actual material wealth. He offers the Taoist pursuit of harmony, leisure and beauty in simple things as a means to help readers appreciate the world's inherent pleasures and to create a sense of fulfillment.

According to Boldt, everyone can live abundantly by identifying their true sources of happiness, by following the path of least resistance and by redirecting energy that is unnecessarily tied up in the daily struggle to survive in our culture. Each chapter contains short sections focusing on specific Taoist concepts and showing how readers can apply them to their lives, as well as inspiring quotes from Eastern and Western thinkers.

Boldt also provides a workbook section to help readers examine their ideas about money, careers, relationships, time and more. Those looking for a way to sidestep the endless cycle of getting and spending will welcome Boldt's practical, humanist approach to change.
